Families of the Sonoran Desert

January 4, 2013

As the New Year begins, we may find ourselves reflecting on the importance of family. Our own Sonoran desert also displays the role family has in the life cycle of our silent giants, the saguaros. If you look closely you can see families grow and fall together quietly through the years. Here is just one of the wonders you can see if you know just what to look for.

Desert Family

Through the pollination of the saguaro by birds, young saguaros will begin growing under the common Palo Verde tree. As these young cacti begin to grown, the Palo Verde tree will play the role of "Nurse Trees", providing the young saguaros shade and protection. These cacti will grow strong together in these sheltered groups; unlike the solitary saguaros that we normally see.

You may wonder what would happen to these groups of saguaros through the course of time. As I looked around I began seeing these clustered families of saguaros. They stand majestically throughout our desert landscape in the same clustered groupings that began their life cycle a century ago. At their feet, their Palo Verde nurse tree who once protected them and helped them grow and survive the harsh Arizona sun.

From our family to yours may you always surround yourself with the strength and love of family for many generations to come.
